Critique of a website

I looked at the following website:
http://www.globalaigs.org/

Download time
Very fast – BUT the hymn takes over one and a half minutes to download… really worth waiting for (NOT!)

This is an UNBELIEVABLY dreadful website!  … a threesome playing ‘peekaboo’ in the top left corner is pure farce.  The Flash images centre screen and top right are annoying – and have a ‘pointing finger’ which looks like a hyperlink but isn’t.

The navigation frame scrolls down to a scary-looking eye – which blinks on ‘mouseover’.

The link to the Worldwide Congress also gives (instant) unrequested music – and the navigation bar changes.

Just when you think it can’t get any worse, the Glaucoma Society Meeting Announcements page takes you to a completely different look with no link back, not even a back button.

Aim of site
Presumably to keep the initiated informed of what is going on – the site name is not instantly recognisable as dealing with Glaucoma.

Good points
Speed of download but otherwise none – apart from the entertainment value.

… I found the acronyms used on the Organisational Structure link very amusing (e.g. BoGo for Board of Governors)

Bad points
Some of the links in the navigation bar are underlined and others aren’t.  The font size of the top link changes on mouseover.

White text on a fussy background is difficult to read and I think it is a mistake to put a sans serif font into italics.

Poor use of language and display of text (see Mission link)

The link to the Photo’s (sic) page is slow, as is the view from thumbnail to full-size picture … and 173 pictures does seem excessive!

Other browsers
The following website was used to check for using different screen sizes and Macs:
http://www.anybrowser.com/ScreenSizeTest.html
800 x 600 OK but when using 544 x 384; 640 x 840; or 600 x 480: the header cannot be seen in full (but the remainder of the screen can be viewed by scrolling)

When viewed via a Mac, neither the header nor the footer can be seen in full.

Overall evaluation
Very poor – but unexpectedly entertaining!

  1. You seem to have hit on a really good example of what not to do on a web site and have given an excellent evaluation. I sometimes wonder who designs these sites and can only conclude that it is a “do it yourself” site by somebody who really has no idea how to design.

  2. [...] Anne has found a truly awful web site [...]

  3. The navigation is about the only thing clear in this site. The yellow on the top reeeeeally makes my eyes hurt and whilst the colour scheme is contrasting (which is sometimes a good thing) in this case, it’s very unflattering and looks really unprofessional.
